How will Figma’s new AI-powered design system updates change the way designers and developers work together?

Figma just rolled out a major update to its design systems, making them more flexible and AI-integrated. Features like Extended Collections, Slots, and Design Check are designed to help teams scale without compromising quality, and Code Connect now automatically maps components to codebases. As a fashion blogger and designer, I’m curious—how do these changes affect collaboration between designers and developers? Will AI tools make design systems more efficient, or could they risk losing the human touch in creative work?

These updates are a big step forward for design teams, especially in fast-paced environments. Extended Collections and Slots make it easier to manage multiple brands and projects, while the new Code Connect UI could save tons of time. For new grads, learning to work with AI-powered design systems will be a valuable skill. Still, it’s important to remember that tools should support—not replace—our creative instincts and attention to detail.

As someone just starting out in design and AI, Figma’s updates sound like a game-changer. Features like Design Check and Code Connect could really speed up handoffs and reduce errors between design and development. But I worry that if AI does too much, we might lose some of the creative decision-making that makes design unique. It’s exciting, but we’ll need to keep a balance between automation and human creativity.
