How do you create mood boards that actually guide design decisions?

Mood boards look artistic but often become forgotten Pinterest pins. As a fashion journalist diving into design insights, what’s the structured process for color extraction, typography pairing, layout ratios, and client presentation flow that turns visual inspiration into concrete specs, style guides, and production-ready decisions?

    3-step system works every time:

    1. Collect 50 images max (Pinterest → Milanote), tag mood/emotion
    2. Extract 5 colors (Coolors.co), 3 fonts (Google Fonts pairing), 2 layouts
    3. Template spec sheet: colors/hex, fonts/weights, grid ratios, key textures

Present as “decision document”, not art. Client picks from your 3 options. Fashion hack: fabric swatches + flat sketches next to digital board.

Pro formula Canva mood board template: https://www.canva.com/mood-boards/templates/ –

    1. Hero image (defines 80% vibe)
    2. Color story (5 swatches + usage rules)
    3. Type scale (H1-H4 + body)
    4. Texture/pattern library (3 max)
    5. Layout thumbnails (mobile/desktop)

Print + laminate for client mtgs. Digital: Figma prototype linking to specs. Test: recreate 3 pages from the board—should take 30min max.
